Needy Kids Can Celebrate Their Birthdays
The Kiwanis Club of Downers Grove has given $300 to sponsor six needy children through the Humanitarian Service Project of Carol Stream's Children's Birthday Project. For 10 years, the club has been sponsoring children in HSP's program which provides birthday gifts and party supplies for the children of impoverished families. Over that period of time, dozens of needy children in HSP's program have received gifts on their birthdays directly from the Kiwanis Club of Downer's Grove's sponsorships.
Since being founded in 1947, the Kiwanis Club of Downers Grove has supported community groups like HSP as part of their commitment to serve youth and the handicapped and disadvantaged in the community. The group is involved in a number of local and national intiatives focused on helping the homeless, the disabled, and needy children of the community. The club is currently seeing expanding its programs and membership under president Boneta Morris. They meet from 7:30 AM til 8:30 AM every Wendesday morning at Kristina's Restaurant in Downer's Grove.
The funds will be used for HSP's Children's Birthday Project which provides a child ages 3-11 with a 20 lb. Birthday Box. In the box are 4-8 toys which includes a game or puzzle, activity/learning toy, crafting/art set, or sports equipment and gender specific toys. They also receive 5-7 new books, school supplies, a stuffed animal, mini filler gifts, and a party-in-a-box. The child receives the birthday package the week of their birthday, and provides a memorable “Special Day” for an impoverished child in our community. A sponsorship for a child is only $54 and also includes gifts at Christmas time, back-to-school supplies, and the child's family becomes eligible for to receive food through HSP's summer-time Feed the Kids Program and at Christmas as well.

About The Humanitarian Service Project
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,600 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
