COD offers Politics of Latin America and Caribbean this spring
The College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn will offer "Politics of Latin America and the Caribbean" this spring.
This three-credit hour, 16-week course begins Thursday, Jan. 12, and offers an examination of general themes in the politics of the region with a focus on comparative historical experiences spanning the past five centuries.
βAt a time when immigration, human and drug trafficking as well as economic trade flows are issues of increasing significance, it is important that students and the community have a better understanding about the myths and realities of Latin America and the Caribbean,β Professor David Goldberg said. βI think there is an interest in understanding the differences and similarities between the United States and our neighbors in the Western Hemisphere.β
Goldberg, who has spent time in Peru, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and Suriname said there is much to learn from these countries. For example, most students know Haiti as a poor, unstable country, but don't know that it was the first black republic in the hemisphere to overthrow slavery and did so decades before Europe and North America.
