Judson gallery hosts annual 'Elgin 1440' exhibit

Judson University's Draewell Gallery will host the City of Elgin's sixth annual "Elgin 1440" Community Photography Event and Exhibit from Oct. 31 through Nov. 23.

A reception for the exhibition will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 in the Draewell Gallery, located in the Harm A. Weber Academic Center, 1151 N. State St., Elgin.

The exhibition is a contest for Elgin-area residents “meant to capture life in Elgin within a one day period," according to the webpage for the City of Elgin. To be eligible for the exhibit, all contestants were required to submit a photograph taken between 12 a.m. and 11:50 p.m. on Sept. 10, 2011, allowing only 1,440 minutes for them to capture the perfect shot. In keeping with this year's theme of "Details and Dwellings," the photographers were asked to photograph "inside and outside the beautiful and unique homes and buildings that make Elgin an architectural treasure trove."

The event has been made possible by the City of Elgin, the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission and the Daily Herald.

"We are excited for the opportunity to partner with the City of Elgin and the Elgin Arts Commission for this exhibition,” says Draewell Gallery Director and Arts Professor Joseph Cory. “It is a wonderful way to support and display many of the photographers who live and work in the Elgin area. The arts are a vibrant part of our campus and within the greater Elgin community. This is another way to showcase that."

Judson University is a four-year Christian liberal-arts university in Elgin, Ill. Among more than 60 majors and minors that the university offers, the Judson Department of Art and Design offers degree programs in Fine Art, General Art, and Visual Communications with emphases in Graphic Design and Photography.
