COD to offer free tour of Russell Kirt Prairie Aug. 25

College of DuPage will offer a free tour of the Russell R. Kirt Prairie from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25.

Tour participants will meet in the atrium of the Health and Science Center, located on the College's campus in Glen Ellyn. The rain date for the tour is Thursday, Sept. 8.

The Russell Kirt Prairie is an 18-acre natural area on the College of DuPage campus that consists of approximately six acres of marsh, a one-acre retention pond, 11 acres of reconstructed prairie and savanna planted between 1984 and 2000, and a quarter mile of display/seed production beds planted in 1997.

Visitors can walk along more than a half mile of trails, including a 1/6-mile wheelchair-accessible stretch.

During the tour, participants will observe an array of wildflowers and tall grasses in bloom and learn about the wildlife, people and processes that have shaped the prairie's ecosystem.
