Golf outing brings in $71,000 for cancer care at Advocate Condell Medical Center

LIBERTYVILLE, IL --- More than $70,000 was raised last month in a golf outing to benefit Cancer Care Services at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

About 120 golfers attended the 30th Annual Advocate Condell Medical Center Penny Schachner Memorial Golf Open, held June 7 at Pine Meadow Golf Club in Libertyville. Top sponsors were Lake County Radiology Associates, S.C.; Murphy Ambulance Company; Pulmonary Medicine Associates, S.C.; HDR Architecture Inc.; and The Wealshire & The Ponds.

"The beneficiary this year was the Cancer Care Services at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, which provides patients a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of cancer," said organizer Jim Zils, who is also a member of Advocate Condell Medical Center's Governing and Development councils. "The unseasonably warm weather did not detract from a successful and fun outing."

The $71,000 raised will help to fund:

Nurse Navigator Program:

Nurse navigators help patients access and understand their medical care and other services by following them through their course of treatment. They provide timely information, guidance and reassurance. These certified professionals assist patients with everything from helping them understand insurance coverage and charity care, finding transportation to and from their appointments, to providing support for patients' emotional and mental well-being.

Community Education and Outreach:

Detecting cancer early offers the greatest possibility of successful treatment. With the help of philanthropy, our team of experts visits schools, churches and community centers to educate our neighbors about the importance of cancer screenings. They provide trips on healthy lifestyles and share important information about diagnostic and treatment options.

Spiritual and Social Services:

Cancer patients often need services that go beyond the direct clinical care they receive. With your gifts to the 2011 Golf Open, Advocate Condell will enhance its support groups and survivorship programs. One initiative, the "Look Good, Feel Better" program co-sponsored with the American Cancer Society, teaches beauty techniques to help women with cancer manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.

Advocate Condell Medical Center offers advanced diagnostic and treatment options for patients with cancer, including Radiation Oncology and Outpatient Infusion centers, as well as a full range of classes and support groups for patients and their families and caregivers. The annual Golf Open was named for Libertyville resident Penny Schachner starting in 2009, following her death from cancer in 2008. Penny Schachner was a dedicated member of the Auxiliary of Advocate Condell Medical Center, and worked with her husband, Bob Schachner, on the Golf Open for many years.

The event is hosted by the Auxiliary of Advocate Condell Medical Center and the Advocate Charitable Foundation. For more information on giving opportunities at Condell, please contact the development office at (847) 990-5843.
