Edison students raise $1,223 to brighten needy kids' birthdays
Edison Middle School students raised $1,223 to fund brighter birthdays for needy children in the Humanitarian Service Project's (HSP) Children's Birthday Project.
The school, located at 1125 S. Wheaton Ave. in Wheaton, has conducted the fundraiser for the Children's Birthday Project since 1994.
Heather Gordon, the school's student council advisor, said, “The students conducted a Money Madness coin drive with classes competing to raise the most money. They really went all out this year and enjoyed helping these deserving children have a great birthday!”
The fund will be used for HSP's Children's Birthday Project which provides a child ages 3-12 with a 25-30 lb. Birthday Box containing 6 new books, 6-15 new toys, school supplies, stuffed animals, one new game, various other gifts such as bubbles, card games, mini toys, and a Party-in-a-Box filled with all the items necessary to have a birthday party. The child receives the birthday package the week of their birthday, and provides a memorable “Special Day” for an impoverished child in our community.
A sponsorship for a child is only $54 and also includes gifts at Christmas time, back-to-school supplies, and the child's family becomes eligible for the HSP's summer-time Feed the Kids Program as well.
Karole Kettering, Executive Director of the Humanitarian Service Project said, “The Edison Middle School students are truly amazing! This year they sent in their largest donation ever for the Children's Birthday Project. These young philanthropists set a great example for other students by helping needy children have a fabulous birthday!”

HSP is given the highest honor charity by Charity Navigator for the sixth consecutive year. HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,264 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
