Wheaton Lions donates $1,000 for Humanitarian Service Project Programs
The Wheaton Lions Club donated $1,000 to help needy senior citizens in DuPage and Kane counties through the Humanitarian Service Project's (HSP) Senior Citizens Project. This marks the fifth year the club has contributed to the program that serves 120 low-income seniors. In addition, the Wheaton Lions Club has also funded other programs at the Carol Stream-based non-profit that assist needy children and seniors.
The Wheaton Lions Club's mission is to serve the visual and hearing impaired while enjoying good fellowship. They are known for their sight-related programs, including SightFirst, the world's largest blindness prevention program, according to the club's website. “The Wheaton Lions Club members have truly been great champions in helping us alleviate the hunger and stress that poverty brings to the low-income seniors we serve” said Karole Kettering, Executive Director of the HSP.
The impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizens Project receive monthly deliveries of 90 lbs. of groceries that include a variety of frozen meats, non-perishable foods, personal care items and paper products, in addition to fresh fruits and vegetables. The seniors also receive a monthly “Secret Pal” gift and Holiday Meal provided by HSP's volunteers.

About The Humanitarian Service Project:
HSP has been given the highest Four Star rating by Charity Navigator for the sixth consecutive year. HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering Project, 1,264 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce during the summer months. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive that benefited a total of 5,200 children by giving supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair and directly to schools and individual children.
