Huntley snares Harlem Invite title; Sabres win

Concluding play at the Harlem Invitational with a 6-0 win over Woodstock and a 2-1 victory over last year's Class 1A state champions, Rockford Lutheran, Huntley (8-0) claimed tournament championship title honors.

Taylor Henning's hat trick helped the Red Raiders with the opening victory assisted by Lauren Opolony and Kelly Creager. Ashley Williams added 2 goals (Kaylee O'Brien assist) and Aimee Wronski found the back of the net on a pass from Gretchen Bachrodt.

Sarah Hoffman and Katlyn Owens shared goalkeeper duties, but neither touched a shot.

In the title game, Henning got Huntley on the board assisted by Kristina Barretto, and Williams scored what would later become the game-winner assisted by Opolony. Again, Hoffman (2 saves) and Owens (3 saves) split time in the net.

"This was a good tournament for us," said Huntley coach Kris Grabner. "I was good to see our girls in a tight game. We hadn't really been tested yet.

"The girls stepped up."

Girls soccer

Streamwood 6, East Aurora 0: Streamwood (2-2-3) opened action at the West Aurora Tournament pushing six shots into the back of the net while allowing none. Both Alanah Thompson and Violet Sanchez scored a pair of goals, while Mayra Nevarez and freshman Valentina Escalante each nabbed single knocks. Assists came from Thompson, Lonnie Prout, Jen Kaeseberg and Geena Boris.

Pearl Patel was in goal for the shutout recording 3 saves.

Hoffman Estates 3, Prairie Ridge 1: Jamie Kohl scored the lone goal for Prairie Ridge (0-2) in this nonconference match with Hoffman Estates. In goal, Kyli Humm blocked 9 shots for the Wolves.

Conant 6, Dundee-Crown 0: Deanna Libricz collected 6 saves in goal for Dundee-Crown (0-4-1) as they fell in nonconference action.

CL Central 7, Elgin 0: Unable to find the back of the net, Elgin (0-1-1) dropped this nonconference contest to Crystal Lake Central. Yesenia Meza was in goal recording 6 saves.

Larkin 1, Fenwick 0: Larkin (2-3-1) earned a victory at the Pepsi Showdown shutting out Fenwick. Kelli Johnson scored the only goal of the game on a free kick during the first half. In goal for the Royals, Anna Goodlove tallied 5 saves for the shutout.

Lockport 2, Jacobs 0: Alyssa Barnhard (2 saves) and Catie Quitschau (3 saves) split time in goal for Jacobs (1-6) as the Golden Eagles fell in nonconference play at the Pepsi Showdown.

Freeport 6, St. Edward 1: Trailing 4-0 at the half, St. Edward (2-1) lost this nonconference contest to Freeport. Brittany Brozek scored the only Green Wave goal off a dish by Alex Rubio. Taylor Hunsberger kept busy in goal recording 13 saves.

Baseball

Wauconda 7, Huntley 0: Only able to get 1 hit, Huntley (5-3) dropped this nonconference game to Wauconda. Jeremy Grap took the loss allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits while striking out six in 5 innings of work.

Rockford Lutheran 8, Hampshire 4: James Goebbert was the bright spot in this nonconference loss for Hampshire (1-4). Goebert led plate efforts with a double, but was on the mound for the loss recording 3 strikeouts.

Wheaton North 9, Streamwood 5: Despite solid plate appearances from Ryan Kiesel (2-for-3, 2b), Matt Korntved (2b), Rob Barth (2-for-2) and Jason Overton (hit, 2 RBI), Streamwood (1-4) dropped this nonconference game to Wheaton North.

Brian Domokos suffered the loss.

Burlington Central drops two to Geneva: Burlington Central (3-4) suffered two tough nonconference losses to Geneva losing by scores of 3-0 and 13-12.

With just 3 hits in the opener, Bryan Bell was on the mound for the loss allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while recording 7 strikeouts in 6 innings of work.

The Rocket offense woke up for the back end, led by Bell (2-for-4) and Mark Gorney (3-for-3) but it wasn't quite enough as Geneva walked away with the 1-run win. Drew Perly took the loss in relief.

Cary-Grove 11, Antioch 10: Kyle Williams led the Trojans (8-0) to victory hitting 4 doubles and a home run. Cary-Grove managed to post 14 hits as a team to defeat Antioch in this nonconference game. Luke Mottashed, Eric Aguilera and David Ptaszek contributed adding a double each. Ben Mottashed (3-0) pitched 2 innings with 3 strike outs for the win.

Hersey 17, Dundee-Crown 10: The Chargers (2-2) fell short in this nonconference battle against Hersey. Willie Larsen, Ken Warzalek and Kyle Livengood added a double each to help keep the Chargers going. Dan Kilchenman (0-1) suffered the loss for Dundee-Crown.

Westminster Christian 10, Glenbard East 4: The Warriors (5-3-1) came out strong scoring 3 in the first inning and combing for a team high 11 hits. Cory Hodge led for Westminster with a double, home run and RBI. Casey Shuring went 3 for 4 with a double and a RBI, while teammate Carter Ward (1 for 4, RBI) also contributed. Brandon Siewart picked up his first win pitching 4 innings with 2 strike outs and 4 walks. Ben Palmer pitched the last 3 innings striking out 5 and walking 2.

Boys tennis

At Hersey: Cary-Grove coach Bud Lachel watched his two best singles players, senior Jake Szybowicz and freshman Chris Federighi, debut as the Trojans' No. 1 doubles team after the pair each played a match at singles against Hersey.

"Sometimes you cannot just put two very good players together and expect very much," Lachel said. "But those two guys played well together in two matches and may have the makings of something after getting more matches under their belt on the weekend."

The Szybowicz-Federighi team was on cruise control in its match with BG's Alec Martino and George Foutris before the Bison came back to draw even at 5-5 in the second set.

Cary-Grove broke Martino to go up 6-5 and won it all when Szybowicz unloaded a piercing forehand up the center.

At CL South Invitational: Invitational host Crystal Lake South opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Bartlett, but bounced back to win their final two matches defeating DeKalb 4-1 and Wheaton Warrenville South 3-2.

Cam Laktash went 3-0 on the day recording two victories at No. 1 singles and one at No. 1 doubles beside partner Jeff Lemberger. At No. 3 singles Alec Shimon/ Danny Trebac went 2-0 and Kenny Dolan and Lemberger also tallied 2-0 finishes.

Badminton

Larkin wins home Invitational: With first place finishes from Natta Senesombath (No. 2 singles) and No. 1 doubles Bonnie Bielarz/Betty Flores, Larkin tallied 20 points to win the Larkin Invitational. The Royals also had second place endings from Emily Sothikhoun (No. 1 singles), Lindsay Iverson/Babel Barm (No. 2 doubles) and No. 3 doubles Lisa Perfors/Catherine Sivoraphet.

Bartlett finished second overall with 18 points, while Streamwood (17 points) took second, South Elgin third with 11 points and Elgin fourth with 4 points.

The Hawks were led by champions Erica Pang (No. 3 singles), Nicole Go (No. 4 singles) and the No. 3 doubles team of Poorva Gohkale and Ankita Patel.

For Streamwood, Amebelle Schneider (No. 2 singles), Savanah Montero (No. 3 singles) and Megan DeGuia (No. 4 singles) each took second place as did No. 2 doubles Mary Mikula/Angie Salazar.

Lauren Mehr led South Elgin with championship honors at No. 1 singles.

Boys volleyball

At Rolling Meadows: Going 3-1 in Day 2 action of the Rolling Meadows Invitational, Bartlett concluded things with a 25-16, 25-18 victory over Waukegan for fifth place honors.

The Hawks (4-2) also tallied wins over St. Viator (25-23, 25-14) and Maine West (25-21, 25-14). Their lone loss of the day came versus Fremd who beat them 25-21, 18-25 and 15-11.

Bartlett received key play from Chris Guimon (28 kills, 5 aces, 19 digs, 7 blocks), Sam Hillis (17 kills, 2 aces, 13 digs, 4 blocks), John Campolo (15 kills, 3 digs, 12 blocks), Jason Theobald (11 aces, 11 digs, 5 blocks, 77 assists) and Scott Kuehn (26 kills, 17 digs, 4 blocks).

South Elgin (4-7) picked up a win over St. Joseph's (25-11, 25-22), but fell to Rolling Meadows (26-24, 25-14), Waukegan (25-19, 25-17) and St. Viator by scores of 25-11 and 25-23.

Leading the stat categories for the Storm were Jim McMahon (20 kills, 12 digs, 7 blocks), Kevin Mui (16 kills, 20 digs), Andrew Gleason (26 digs, 11 kills), Doug Sawyer (13 kills) and Akash Patel (26 digs). Robbie Vasquez tallied 61 assists.

College baseball

Judson sweeps Cardinal for eighth straight wins: Judson (9-13, 6-2) picked up consecutive wins No. 7 and No. 8 sweeping Cardinal Stritch in CCAC action by scores of 1-0 and 5-2.

Oscar DePablos was the Game 1 hero going 4-for-7 with the lone RBI of the game. Carlos Soto went the distance holding Cardinal to just 3 hits, retiring the first six batters he faced while striking out two.

Judson took a quick lead in Game 2 and never looked back. DePablos (3b, run), Rafael Tejada Jr. (2-for-2, run), Jake Bostwick (2b, 2 RBI) and Kevin Fischer (2-for-4, run) led offensive efforts. On the mound, Scott Kainovic collected the victory allowing one run in 7 innings pitched.

Judson will host Trinity International on Monday at 4 p.m. at Hoffer Field.

ECC sweeps Oakton: In Game 1 the Spartans (10-5, 4-0) defeated Oakton 13-3. Austin Licon led with 2 doubles while Greg Stolzenburg also added a double. Andrew Burkett (3-1) pitched all 5 innings allowing 4 hits with 3 earned runs. Not much changed in Game 2 as the Spartans beat Oakton 14-4 to complete the ISCC sweep. Trevor Rutkowski and Brad Porto each had a home run for the Spartans. Matt Wietlispach, Trevor Rutkowski and Josh Axelsen all added a double each to keep Elgin moving around the bases. Jim Van Syckle snagged the win pitching all 5 innings with 7 strike outs and 3 walks.

College softball

Judson sweeps Trinity Christian College: Judson (15-13, 6-4) recorded its third straight CCAC series win with this sweep over Trinity Christian College by scores of 10-2 and 8-5. The Eagles pounded out 25 hits for 18 runs in two games.

Aimee Ewert earned the victory with a complete game effort striking out seven. She also went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Additional offensive help came from Nicole Dimiceli (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Debra Leganski (HR, 3 RBI). Lizzy Jacobson went 2-for-3.

The Eagles trailed Game 2 early but bounced back behind timely hitting from Ewert (2 for 3, HR, RBI), Dimiceli (3-for-3, HR, 3 RBI, 3 runs), Carrie Sensor (2 hits), Kristin Krueger (2 hits), Jacobson (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Leganski (2 hits, RBI).

Judson splits with Elmhurst College: With an 11-3 win and a 10-6 loss, Judson split a nonconference series with Elmhurst College Friday night. Debra Leganski was the big offensive provider going 3-for-6 with 7 RBI in the two games combined. Two of her three knocks were home runs.

Lizzy Jacobson was inside the circle for the 11-3 victory recording 5 strikeouts in 5 innings of work for her fifth win of the season.

Offensively, Leganski (2-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 runs), Brenda Perry (2b, 2 RBI) and Nicole Dimiceli (2-for-4, RBI) led the way.

Despite key plate performances from Sensor (2-for-4, run), Leganski (3 RBI) and Rachel Pope (2 RBI), Judson fell 10-6 in Game 2. Aimee Ewert endured the loss.
