Northwest Concert Band Summer Series To Go On Despite Director's Injury

The Northwest Concert Band will present its free summer outdoor concert series entitled "Musical Mondays" as previously scheduled. Associate Director Randy Steinberg announced that the band will be conducted by Chicago-area professional musician and band leader Dana Legg. Legg is a long-time colleague of Musical Director Ralph Wilder, who was injured in a freak accident at Northeastern Illinois University on May 6, and remains hospitalized.

Each concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be performed at St. Colette Catholic Church, 3900 Meadow Drive, Rolling Meadows.

The first concert, "Fiesta Latina", on Monday, June 11, will feature music inspired by Latin America. The St. Colette Spanish-language choir, "Voces Y Guitarras", will perform several selections during the program.

The series continues on June 25, featuring the delightful vocalists Wayne and Kathleen Messmer, singing Broadway and other favorites. A "Patriotic Concert" will light up the night on Wednesday, the Fourth of July, just prior to the Rolling Meadows Independence Day fireworks display - which is held right there next to St. Colette!

Noted jazz singer Leah Novak will be featured on July 16, and a final concert will be presented on July 30. There is nothing more "All-American" than an outdoor band concert in the summer - and excellent refreshments are available during each hour-long performance.

The Northwest Concert Band was founded in 2015 by director Ralph Wilder and a group of passionate musicians. One of the premier community concert bands in Chicago's Northwest suburbs, the 60 plus member band has delighted audiences year round. The band welcomes musicians of all ages who play a band instrument. There is no audition, but members are asked to attend weekly rehearsals to learn and perform high quality and challenging music. The band rehearses on Monday evenings at St. Colette.

The repertoire features a wide variety of musical genres such as Classical, Marches, Broadway, Pop, Rock, Swing, Jazz and much more. The band constantly assembles exciting concert programs that feature guest artists, soloists, singers, vocal ensembles, narrators and even people playing unique instruments not seen before. Some guests have included local TV and radio personalities as well as Chicago Symphony guest soloists.

In addition to concerts, members also work with local communities and families to provide interesting musical experiences including musical workshops, educational opportunities, and opportunities to play with, and conduct (yes conduct!) the band!
