Fox River Valley Chapter DAR to host annual Student Award reception Feb. 24

The Fox River Valley Chapter of the National Society of the Daughter of the American Revolution will present the third annual DAR Student Award Reception at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the American Community Bank, 10101 Route 47 in Huntley.

The annual program recognizes local students for their outstanding accomplishments.

The DAR Good Citizens Program and Scholarship Contest are intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The students selected as the school's DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism to an outstanding degree.

Each student presented an essay on "Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It" with the focus question: "How has America advanced the cause of freedom in the rest of the world?"

The DAR Good Citizen Class of 2018 students are: Matthew R. Jensen from Huntley High School, Madyson Saveley from Hampshire High School, and Nicole Zatz from Jacobs High School.

The annual American History Essay Contest participant's topic was "World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars."

All three students are District II winners and state finalists. They are Brady Seaburg, sixth-grader at Quest Academy in Huntley: Grant Bytner, seventh-grader at Holy Family Academy in Sleepy Hollow: and John Fiandaca, eighth-grader at Heineman Middle School in Huntley.

The Christopher Columbus Essay Contest winner and state finalist is Megan Dickerson, a sophomore at Huntley High School. The topic was "Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationships between Foreign Parties."

Fox River Valley Chapter DAR is honored to announce the state winner of the Outstanding Teacher of American History: Melissa Craig, a seventh- and eighth-grade history teacher at St. Thomas More School in Elgin.
