Harper aims to connect hundreds of students

Research has long shown that engagement in higher education is critical to success. That's no less true at community colleges, where many students - who live off-campus and may work fulltime or have a family - don't feel connected.

Harper College is hoping to give its newest class of first-year students a leg up.

"Involve Yourself!" will offer new students a glimpse into what the college experience really looks like, how to get involved and how to be successful. The daylong program will also connect students and attempt to build an understanding of their different cultures and backgrounds.

More than 300 students already have registered.

"This is the first time we're doing anything like this," said Chris George, Coordinator of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement at Harper. "Many students say they feel isolated and have a hard time building relationships. We're trying to create a community and give students the confidence they need to make the most of their college experience."

The program will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, in the Student Center, Building A on the College's main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.

The event aims to address troubling statistics among community colleges, where more than half of students across the country don't stick around for a second year. George said the last couple hours will feature a high-energy mixer.
