Enjoy a 'Choral Celebration' with Heartland Voices this weekend

The spring concert this weekend for Heartland Voices will feature music selected by the singers themselves in a "Choral Celebration."

The group was asked to offer a selection or two that were favorites or had some special meaning for them. More than 40 pieces were submitted, and paired down to 19 by the artistic committee.

Artistic director John G. Slawson chose from among those to perform at the spring concerts.

The result is a potpourri of choral music from some of the best composers of choral music, Randall Thompson, Eric Whitacre, Stephen Paulus, George Gershwin, Samuel Barber and others. The chorus will perform selections in Latin, French and English in a variety of styles including vocal jazz, spirituals, and traditional classic.

The repertoire is filled with great pieces, like, "Summertime", "My Soul's Been Anchored", "Gloria" from "Bluegrass Mass", "Pilgrim's Hymn", "Dirait-on," just to name a few.

The Friday concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at Hampshire High School, 1600 Big Timber Road. It features student choirs for Burlington Central and Hampshire high schools. It also features guest conductor and clinician Nancy Menk.

On Saturday, Heartland Voices will perform all of these works at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave. in Elgin.

The Sunday concert will be at 3 p.m. on the campus of Trinity International University in Deerfield. The concert will be held in the A.T. Olsen Chapel on campus. The Trinity Concert Choir, directed by Paul Satre, will join Heartland Voices for this performance.

Tickets for Friday's concert at Hampshire High School are $5 or $2 for students.

Tickets for Saturday's concert at First United Methodist Church in Elgin are $18, $15 for seniors; those age 13 or younger are admitted free.

The Sunday afternoon performance at Trinity International University will be accepting a freewill offering.
