St. Emily track team sends 24 to State

The St. Emily track team had a very successful season this year. The team finished the season strong across its fifth- to eighth-grade athletes by taking the conference championship. The Mount Prospect school is part of the Northwest Catholic Conference, which encompasses 12 parochial schools in the local area.

After the conference win, the team competed in the sectional tournament at Antioch High School. This sectional is one of the largest in the state Class A division, with 15 teams from both public and private schools. The St. Emily team had 24 athletes qualify for the State meet that was held in Peoria May 16 and 17.

Paul Bergstrom qualified in four events, 800, high jump, 4x200 and 4x400. Paul landed on the podium at State with an eighth-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:16.

Sarah Magnoni qualified in three events, 1600, with a 6:01 time, 4x100 and 4x400.

Aubrey Hasley competed in the 800 and 4x200 relay.

Other competitors were:

4x100 relay, seventh-grade girls division: Finishing 15th in State with a time of 57.59 Julianna Carusiello; also competing were Sarah Magnoni, Emily Goebel, Julia Nowak and alternate Ashley Greenan.

4x200 relay, seventh-grade girls division: Aubrey Hasley, Olivia Accardi, Abbey Kropp, Gabriella Piagari and alternate Kara Dempsey.

4x200 relay, seventh-grade boys division: Jimmy Bauml, Scott Rogowski, Kevin Igoe, Patric Natindim, and alternate Lucas Geiger.

4x200 relay, eighth-grade boys division: Finishing 19th with a time of 1:46 Alberto Kovacevic, also competing were Richard Rinka, Paul Bergstrom, Kenny Yi, and alternate Steven Chiovari.

4x400 relay, eighth-grade girls division: Sarah Magnoni, Mary Paczko, Vanessa Gammerillo, Loreta Dugo and alternate Lindsey Kalble.

4x400 relay, eighth-grade boys division: Alberto Kovacevic, Richard Rinka, Paul Bergstrom, Kenny Yi. and alternate Kevin Igoe.

The team is coached by Lori Magnoni, Lisa Piagari, Tia Roberson and Joe Billmeier.
