Maher’s doubles key Elk Grove wins

Becca Maher and Elk Grove’s softball team doubled their fun on Saturday.

Maher had 5 doubles in a 9-8 and 18-4 (5 innings) doubleheader sweep of visiting Maine South.

The junior shortstop was 7-for-9 for the day (5-for-5 in the opener with 3 doubles, 4 RBI and 2 runs), including the game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1.

“Becca just really hit the ball in each trip to the plate,” said Elk Grove coach Ken Grams. “They were really legitimate hits. Good for her.”

Freshman Alex Masnica (2-for-4) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left center before Maher drove her home with a shot down the left field line.

It gave Rylee Romano the win as the senior hurler (3-0) struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Other key hitters for the Grens (9-2) were Aleece Duffy (2-for-4), Elisa Payne (1-for-3, 2 RBI) and Marjorie Sloan (double).

Senior Brianna De Silvia (2-1) earned the win in Game 2 with 2 strikeouts and no walks.

Sophomore Brianna Leach (3-for-4, 4 RBI, double) belted her second homer of the season with a 2-run blast in the first inning.

Other multiple hitters for the defending Mid-Suburban League East champs were Maher (2-for-4, 2 doubles, RBI), Duffy (3-for-4, 3 RBI), Payne (2-for-4, double, 4 RBI), Megan Eul (2-for-4), Shannon Taucher (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Abbey Sloan (2-for-4, 2 RBI).

Palatine 10, Vernon Hills 0: Palatine (5-4) won for the fourth time in five games behind senior Megan Hedstrom’s 1-hitter. She struck out five (one batter every inning) and walked two to improve to 5-3.

Lauren Logan reached base three times and scored every time. The senior receiver had a double and an RBI.

Other key hitters for the Pirates were Tori Walzak (2-for-2, sacrifice, 3 RBI), who had a bases-loaded single with two outs in second inning, Jamie Haze (1-for-3, 2 RBI, 1-for-3), Courtney English (2-for-3, double, RBI), Jules Udoni (1-for-2, double, RBI) and McKenzie Craver (2-for-2, 2 runs)

Prospect 3, Glenbrook North 1: Glenbrook North and Prospect not only battled each other at Melas Park in Mt. Prospect but they faced a brutally cold wind blowing in from the west.

“That was the coldest 48 degrees I’ve ever seen,” said Prospect coach Jim Adair, whose team received a stellar pitching performance by Michelle Korf (5-hitter and 7 strikeouts to improve to 2-3), solid defense and timely hitting.

Prospect (2-7) scored in the top of the first when Rachel Trebswether drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on an errant pickoff throw to first base.

The game was tied at 1-1 when Prospect scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.

Trebswether led off with a single and stole second base.

Two outs later, Cassie Poulos singled sharply to center to score Trebswether.

The Knights added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Michele Molini and Casey Lenski (2-for-4, double, RBI), doubled with two outs. Maggie Pancini went 2-for-3 for Prospect.

“We got the game in and it felt great to play well and come away with a win,” Adair said. “It was also nice for us to put the three elements (pitching, defense, timely hitting) together in the same game and score some runs with two outs in an inning.”

Rolling Meadows sweeps: Seniors Sara Brunlieb (4-4) and Hannah Whidden (2-0) were the winning pitchers for host Meadows which improved to 6-4 after defeating Niles North.

Senior shortstop Sam Anderson (3-for-5, 4 RBI) belted her first homer of the season in the second inning, a 3-run blast to left center with one out to become the school’s all-time leader with 12.

Classmate Grace Skorin was 3-for-4 in the game with 2 RBI and a double and Whidden tripled.

Brunlieb (4-4) struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

The Vikings used a 3-run homer to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh in Game 2.

But the Mustangs answered with 3 in the bottom half.

Junior Jenny Watson delivered the game winner with a one-out single to left to score Skorin.

Sophomore Lane Winkler’s double to right-center had tied the game at 5-5 when Chloe Prodanovic and Whidden crossed the plate.

Whidden struck out nine and did not walk a batter while notching the win.

Top hitters for the Mustangs were Anderson (2-for-4), Whidden (2-for-4, RBI) and Winkler (2-for-3, 2 RBI).

Barrington sweeps: The home run derby continued for Barrington (11-0) in its doubleheader sweep of visiting Mundelein as the Fillies belted 5 more homers, giving them 17 in 11 games.

Seniors Loren Krzysko and Morgan Olszewski each had 2 homers for the day as the Fillies recorded a 9-2 win in the opener and a 10-0 five-inning triumph in Game 2.

Senior Cassidy Kraimer (3-0) recorded 4 strikeouts as the winning pitcher in Game 1.

Krzysko (4-for-4, home run, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Maggie O’Hara (4-for-4, home run, double, 4 RBI) and Raegan Fingerman (2-for-3, RBI) led the Fillies’ offense.

In Game 2, sophomore Keenan Dolezal ran her record to 8-0 by tossing a 3-hitter with 5 strikeouts.

The offense got a lift from Tess Bolger (2-for-2, double, RBI), Krzysko (2-for-4, double, home run, 5 RBI), Fingerman (2-for-4, double, RBI), Olszewski (2-for-3, home run, 3 RBI) and Erin Ward (double).

Krzysko’s grand slam — the second of the season for the Fillies — sparked a 5-run fourth inning. It was her seventh homer of the season while Olszewski now has four.

Wheeling splits: Junior ace Katie Quagliano (3-3) earned the win in Game 1 as the host Wildcats (4-4) blanked Glenbrook South 2-0 before falling 6-2 in Game 2.

Lauren Hart (2-for-2, double, RBI), Nikki Mikosz (double, RBI), Jackie Resnick (double), Sara Kern (double) and Emily Walker (RBI) helped pace the Wildcats’ offense.

Walker also had a triple and RBI in Game 2 while teammate Kristen Ambrose recorded her first varsity hit and had an RBI.
