McHenry County College offers youth soccer camps

Submitted by McHenry County College

McHenry County College Scots’ Department of Athletics is sponsoring the 11th annual ScotStars soccer all-skills and striker/goalkeeper specialty camps, July 9-19 for boys and girls. An all-skills camp for boys and girls will take place from July 9-12; students entering first through fourth grades meet from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and students entering fifth through ninth grades meet from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The specialty striker/goalkeeper camps for boys and girls entering grades three through nine will take place July 16-19. The striker camp is from 9 to 11:15 a.m. and the goalkeeper camp is from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. If there are multiple inclement weather days, Friday may be used as a makeup day. In the event of inclement weather, the camps will move indoors to the MCC Gym. Campers should bring clean indoor-type gym shoes in case the camp takes place inside.

The camps are coordinated by veteran MCC Men’s Head Soccer Coach Karl Smith, who is a three-time Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year. Smith has also been named twice as the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IV Coach of the Year. The camps will be held at the MCC soccer field located on the east side of the College in Crystal Lake.

Campers will be grouped by age, gender and/or ability whenever feasible. Participants will learn age-appropriate skills, improve self-confidence, ability and enjoyment, make new friends and appreciate the positive aspects of soccer, all in a safe, supervised environment close to home.

Each camp is $59 for the week, which includes an MCC ScotStars camp T-shirt, a souvenir promotional mini-ball, water bottle, group photo and a certificate of completion.

Parents and campers should arrive between 15 to 20 minutes early on the first day of camp, Monday, July 9 and/or Monday, July 16, to receive orientation information and to fill out required forms. Campers should wear soccer shoes and shin guards as well as bringing adequate water and/or sports drinks, plus sunscreen and bug spray. Parents are welcome to stay and observe. Vehicles should enter the MCC campus at the stoplight at Entrance 1, and proceed to parking lot “D” near the soccer field. For the safety of the campers, no player drop-offs on the MCC access roadway. Drop off in parking lot “D” and use the crosswalk before and after camp.
