Downers Grove Choral Society begins 63rd season with 'Light Out of Darkness' concert

On Sunday, Nov. 14, the Downers Grove Choral Society, with artistic director John Patrick Rakes, is beginning its 63rd season with a live concert "Light Out of Darkness."

The concert will feature 18th-century German composer J.S. Bach's Cantata 131 ("Aus der Tiefen"); 20th-century French composer Gabriel Fauré's "Requiem," Opus 48; South California-based composer Morten Lauridsen's "Sure on This Shining Night"; and Greenville, S.C.-based composer Dan Forrest's "fermata."

Advance tickets are $20, $15 for senior, and $10 for student. Tickets at the door are $22, $17 for seniors, and $12 for students. The "Light Out of Darkness" concert will be presented at Downers Grove First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Ave. There will be a preconcert discussion at 3:15 p.m., followed by the 4 p.m. concert.

The Downers Grove Choral Society draws its members from around the Chicago area. Its membership extends well beyond Downers Grove, including such communities as Western Springs, Elgin, Woodridge, Lemont, Wheaton, St. Charles, Naperville, Bloomingdale, Lombard, Aurora, Villa Park, Darien and Willowbrook, to name just a few.

This concert will be presented in accordance with Centers for Disease Control guidelines. Masks are required inside the Downers Grove First United Methodist Church.

The Downers Grove Choral Society is partially supported by the DuPage Community Foundation as well as patrons and members. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
