CLC presents Shakespeare's 'As You Like It'

The College of Lake County Theatre department will present "As You Like It," one of William Shakespeare's best-known comedies, Feb. 28 to March 7 in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the Grayslake Campus.

Show times are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and 29, and Thursday through Saturday, March 5-7; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1. There will also be a high school matinee at 10 a.m. Friday, March 6.

In "As You Like It," comic twists and turns abound in the mythical Forest of Arden, where a disguised Rosalind seeks refuge after being wrongfully banished by her uncle.

Her unfortunate exile is transformed into a charming adventure when she encounters some of Shakespeare's most beloved characters: colorful fools, witty rustics and the lovesick Orlando.

The production has live music, fitting for what is one of Shakespeare's most musical plays, said Craig Rich, chair of CLC's Theatre Department and the play's director.

"In many ways, 'As You Like It' is the culmination of Shakespeare's greatest comedies," he said. "It takes all the elements audiences loved about his comic plays and multiplies them. As a result, there is more love, more action and physical comedy, and more music.

"If a person attending the play doesn't understand every single word of Shakespeare, that's OK, because they will be able to follow the story by what the characters are doing: their actions and reactions, their physicality and gestures, and their rich emotional journey," Rich said.

"It is our job, as theater artists, to tell the story vocally, physically and emotionally."

The 2019-20 academic year marks 50 years of CLC theater, and as part of the celebration, the public is invited to stay for a reception immediately following the March 1 performance.

Tickets are available in person at the Box Office, by phone at (847) 543-2300 or online at www.clcillinois.edu/tickets, which also has pricing and discount information.
