Read to Learn Tutor Training on Jan. 24 or Jan. 25

The Read to Learn basic literacy program has been changing lives in many meaningful ways, for both adult learners and volunteers.

The District 214 Community Education department offers a wide variety of adult education programs, including Read to Learn, a one-to-one basic adult literacy volunteer program that provides free individual tutoring.

If you are searching for a rewarding volunteer opportunity to help improve someone's personal and professional life, Read to Learn may be the perfect fit. The program helps adult learners get better jobs, make new friends, communicate more effectively with their children's teachers and much more.

Training for new and returning volunteer tutors will be held on Jan. 24 or Jan. 25 at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights. The training runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and volunteers can come to either training. Training is mandatory for new tutors.

During a 10-week semester, trained volunteer tutors use individualized lesson plans provided by the site supervisor for their students in order to help improve reading, writing, and communication skills.

"There is value gained by attending tutor training such as enhancing teaching strategies and meeting with fellow new and returning tutors to share experiences and best practices for success," said Laurie Hoffman, Read to Learn coordinator of volunteer services.

Many of the students in the Read to Learn program come from other countries. Volunteers enjoy learning about various cultures and develop friendships with their learners.

Read to Learn has 12 different classes at libraries, schools, churches and Forest View Educational Center. Registration for adult learners begins Jan. 21 and continues through Jan. 27.
