CLC hosts four Solar Week events related to solar energy, sustainability

Technologies and job opportunities in solar energy are the focus of four events scheduled at the College of Lake County's Solar Week on the Grayslake Campus from Sept. 22 to 29.

Photovoltaic solar panels and geothermal heat pumps in CLC's new Science and Engineering Building are included in the 2018 Illinois Solar Tour Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours will be ongoing and led by students and CLC sustainability staff, said David Husemoller, the college's sustainability manager. The event is sponsored by the Illinois Solar Energy Association.

An open house, showcasing the Science and Engineering Building, will take place from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26 inside the A Wing entrance. The event includes brief tours of the rooftop solar panels, geothermal heat pumps as well as rainwater harvesting used in flushing toilets, all of which are part of the building's goal of pending LEED Platinum certification. Also on the agenda is an open house, on the first floor of the A Wing, welcoming new CLC President Lori Suddick, Ed.D., who joined the college in May.

A conference, titled Solar Energy: Education and Jobs, takes place Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 7-9 p.m. in the Room A011 Auditorium. Representatives from solar energy companies will share their career paths, and others will explain education and training options for solar energy careers in Illinois.

The fourth event, Lake County Green: Solar Workshops for Consumers, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29 from 1-4 p.m. in the Room A011 Auditorium. This event will feature keynote speaker Howard Learner, executive director of the Environmental Law and Policy Center, who will provide an update on Illinois' Future Energy Jobs Act. Breakout sessions will provide information for residents and local businesses interested in incorporating solar technology. The conference also includes a vendor fair.
