Women's Residential Services celebrates 30th anniversary

Lake County officials, Women's Residential Services (WRS) alumni, family members and staff joined April 16 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of helping women with addictions through the WRS program program of the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center.

Established in 1986 through funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services' Department of Alcohol and Substance Abuse, the program has provided services to 2,395 women and 1,204 children since its inception.

The celebration, held at the facility in Vernon Hills, included facility tours, presentation by organization leaders, stories by WRS alumni and light snacks.

WRS is a Dual Diagnosis Capable (DDC) residential treatment program for chemically dependent women and their children. Priority is given to pregnant and parenting women and intravenous drug using women. Individualized treatment focuses on developing a chemical-free lifestyle through building recovery and resiliency skills, and improving parenting skills. Originally located on the top floor of Winchester House on Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville, it moved to its present location in 1997.
