Addison Trail's Foster wins all-around at invite
The Conant boys gymnastics team has aspirations of winning a state championship this season. For now the Cougars simply keep on winning invites.
Conant ran away with the title in Saturday afternoon's Fred Dennis Invite at Addison Trail. It was the third invitational championship for the Cougars, who won at Lake Park and Niles West earlier this season. The Cougars finished with a 153.9, while host Addison Trail was the distant runner-up with a 137.350.
"It was a good win," Conant coach Paul Kim said. "Overall it was an OK meet. We put in some new tricks and a lot of new routines, and some were good and some not so successful."
The all-around trio of Joey Mauk, Anthony Crivolio and Steve Rink led the Cougars. Mauk won parallel bars and still rings while posting a team-best total of 51.6. Crivolio took second on still rings and closed with a 51.1 while Rink placed second on pommel horse and totaled a 50.6. Brian Aites added an 8.2 on still rings for the Cougars.
Competing for the third time in as many days, Addison Trail received another standout performance from freshman Matt Foster to secure second place. Foster, who won the all-around title in Friday's Anthony J. Canino Invitational at Hinsdale Central, took top honors at home with a 54.250.
"It's been really draining with a couple meets in a row but things have been going pretty well for us," Foster said. "I hit 6-for-6 the last two meets and just being consistent has helped a lot."
The Blazers also showed that they are more than a one-man team Saturday, receiving contributions from several gymnasts, which were needed, especially with senior Gianni Levato out with an injury. Shermak Gryzmala had an 8.1 in the floor exercise, Antonio Fiasche scored an 8.6 on vault, Danny Medina had a 6.75 on still rings, Alex Oliva had a 6.9 on pommel horse and 7 on parallel bars and Dan Smith scored a 6.75 on still rings and 7.2 on high bar.
"The nice thing about this team is that they've come together as a unit," Addison Trail coach Mike Galfi said. "We went from a rough night Thursday (against Willowbrook) to a better night Friday and a very good night tonight."
Glenbard East took third place with a 130.35. Kirk Jackson ran into some problems on pommel horse and still rings but still managed to place third in the all-around with a 51.15. Jackson won on vault and high bar.
Hersey placed fourth with a 118.950. Drew Schultz led the Huskies by taking third on vault with a 9.050.
Glenbard North competed short-handed as standout Jesus Soto was unavailable. Ryan Kennedy led the Panthers, taking second in the floor exercise and vault.
Sophomore Eric Owuso finished with an all-around score of 37.3 to help Fenton earn sixth place with a 109.4 while Lake Park scored a 100.4.
