Watercolor, calligraphy artists exhibiting at MCC

Submitted by MCC

Two artists are exhibiting their work featuring calligraphy, watercolor and ink paintings through November at the McHenry County College art galleries, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake.

Ana Zanic of Naperville is showcasing a series of 48 watercolor and ink paintings through Nov. 30 in Epping Gallery in Building B, across from the bookstore. Zanic incorporates formal visual elements, as well as personal feelings and an intuitive, spontaneous process into her work. The works in the “Albert’s Series” in Epping Gallery are part of a large body of work developed as an abstract and continuous diary focusing on personal and universal themes of infancy and parenthood. The artist received a master of arts and master of fine arts from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb, Croatia.

Hekiun Oda, a Roselle resident, is exhibiting calligraphy through Dec. 2 in both Gallery One and Gallery Two, located inside and outside the library, respectively. Oda was born in Kobe City, Japan. He began studying Shodo, traditional Japanese calligraphy, at the age of 5, as a direct student of Goun Katsura Sensei, head of the Shojikai organization in Japan. With more than 25 years experience in Shodo, he established the Oda Japanese Calligraphy School in 2009. He has been awarded the credential of Shihankaku (Junior Master Instructor) from the Shojinkan and Shihan (Master Instructor) from the Nihon Shuji. Oda also teaches calligraphy through the Japanese Culture Institute in Lake in the Hills.

In addition to the exhibit, Oda will present a gallery talk and calligraphy demonstration from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17 in Gallery One. There will be a reception for the artist from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 in Gallery One inside the library.

Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
