Show kids with cancer you care at MCC

McHenry County College will host a St. Baldrick’s “Shave-a-Thon” event from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, in the MCC gym/multi-purpose room, Building A, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake.

Sponsored by the Kiwanis of Crystal Lake Club, the Key Club at Crystal Lake South High School and the MCC Student Senate, the event is open to the public and welcomes volunteers of all ages to get bald as a sign of solidarity with kids with cancer and to raise money to support lifesaving childhood cancer research.

Event organizers will honor Joshua, a student at Crystal Lake South High School, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 8; he was treated at Lutheran General Hospital and is now cancer free at age 15.

Highlights will include children’s skits by the MCC Drama Club as well as barber and salon professionals from Crystal Lake who are donating their time to the Shave-a-Thon. Volunteer hair shavers include Adam and Kevin from Slims Barber Shop, George and Tony from Joe’s Barber Shop, Kat, Julia, Mary and Karen from O’Grady’s Barber Shop, Colleen from Paul Hyland, Libby from Abby Road Studio, Shawn from Klassic Images, Nikki and Alison from Clip Joynt, Steve, Claudia and Dana from International Hairways, and Kim and Carla from Regina.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation currently funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

St. Baldrick’s is proof that one person, one dollar can make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer. What began as a challenge between friends in March of 2000, has grown into the world’s fastest growing volunteer-driven fundraising opportunity benefiting childhood cancer research. The first St. Baldrick’s event took place at Jim Brady’s Restaurant in New York City.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the event or participating as a “shavee” may sign up in the MCC cafeteria from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 5-9. For information, visit kiwaniscrystallake.com/stbaldricks.html or call the MCC Student Life Office at (815) 455-8772.
