MCC celebrates Women's History Month
Join McHenry County College's celebration of Women's History Month during March by taking part in a variety of educational events and entertainment to showcase women and how they use education as the key to empowerment.
This year's program, “Women's Education — Women's Empowerment,” will offer a variety of fun and educational events, including a Women's Film Festival, Lunch and Learn lectures, a women's health and wellness fair and a fundraising event to give back to a woman's scholarship at MCC.
“We are truly excited about this year's program of events, as they all focus on showcasing the importance of education in women's lives,” said Christina Haggerty, director of marketing and public relations, and president of the MCC Chapter of American Association of Women in Community Colleges. “The programming offered will be beneficial to all women within the community — whether MCC students, employees or community residents.”
Women's History Month, in partnership with the MCC Chapter of the AAWCC, will kick off from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 4, with a Women's Film Festival in the Luecht Conference Center at MCC, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake. The event will feature three films by and about women, including: “The Purity Myth” by Jessica Valenti, “The Line” by Nancy Schwartzman, and “Killing Us Softly by Jean Kilbourne. Admission is free for MCC students with a student ID and $5 for the general admission. Proceeds will go toward enhancing the Women's Film Collection in the MCC Library.
The third annual “Take a Walk in Her Shoes Ball” will be from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Boulder Ridge Country Club in Lake in the Hills. This event highlights the personal journeys women take and shoes are symbolic of the steps everyone takes in their lives. A portion of the proceeds benefits the “Women in Transition” scholarship for women ages 24 or older to attend MCC. To make reservations by Monday, March 5, visit supportmcc.org/shoes.
The Empowering Women Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in the MCC Atrium. It will feature interactive displays on health, education, family care and personal enrichment, along with drawings for gift baskets and gift cards and other prizes. Visitors also can meet successful MCC alumni and get help filling out tax returns.
