Winning debut for Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich’s girls volleyball team got its season off to impressive start Tuesday night.

Allie McIlwain pounded 5 kills, and Kiley McPeek and Sydney Glover each had 4, as the Bears beat perennial power Prairie Ridge 25-16, 25-18.

Mallory Parsons added 3 kills, Ashley Dina totaled 11 digs, and Kristen Walding lofted 17 assists for Lake Zurich. Walding also had 3 digs, 2 blocks, 1 kill and 1 ace. Mickenzie Andrews talled 2 blocks and 2 aces. McPeek and McIlwain chipped in 7 digs apiece.

Wauconda d. Mundelein: Sara Sexton and LeAnne Sakowicz slammed 11 and 10 kills, respectively, as the Bulldogs rallied to win their season opener 15-25, 25-22, 25-23 in thrilling fashion.

Susan Karhoff pounded 8 kills and dished out 17 assists for Wauconda. Sakowicz added 12 assists, Ashley Anderson chalked 38 digs, Fernanda Gonzalez had 18 digs, and Cristina Vitucci served 4 aces.

Mundelein (1-1) was led by Yasmeen Johnson’s 8 kills. The Mustangs received 3 kills apiece from Madi Wilcox), Sarah Bregenzer, Alyssa Wilson and Emily Dunkin. Wilcox also had 23 assists, 5 aces and 2 blocks. Wilson delivered 4 aces, and Cindy Kokoszka contributed a pair.

Grant d. Richmond-Burton: Beka Couch and Nicole Buckley each slammed 3 kills, and the Bulldogs won their season opener 25-14, 25-13.

Alyssa Wilhelm served 4 aces for the winners, while Tori Gallaichio and Jamie Reiser delivered a pair apiece. Reiser set 17 of 18 with 7 assists.

Antioch d. Richmond-Burton: The Sequoits won 25-18, 25-22 to improve to 2-0 under new coach Jamie Atkinson.

Sam Falco had 4 kills and 2 solo blocks for Antioch, while Amanda Spear added 3 kills, 3 blocks and 9 service points, including 2 aces.

Atkinson said her Sequoits came out strong, as they led the entire first set. But Antioch fell behind 7 points in the secnd set Spear then blocked a ball in the middle and “changed the game,” Atkinson said.

Spear went back to serve and hammered out four serves, including an ace, as the Sequoits rallied for the victory.
