Salvation Army, York Theatre present 'Guys and Dolls' Nov. 13

Marking the very first time The Salvation Army is partnering with Classic Cinemas, this presentation of "Guys and Dolls" at the York Theatre in Elmhurst holds a special place in the charity's heart.

The Salvation Army Development Director Sue Linden says, “Guys and Dolls is a true classic and also one of over 75 movies The Salvation Army is featured in. We hope to bring many people out to watch the show and support our efforts.”

The Tony Award-winning musical will be presented on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 1:30 and 7 p.m. at the York Theatre, 150 N. York St. Tickets are $5 and all proceeds will benefit The Salvation Army.

Guests will also have the opportunity to see a brief history of the well-known charity on a 6-foot table display that will be located in the theatre's lobby. The table display will include samples of The Salvation Army's original uniforms and instruments as well as information about the programs and services they offer. There will also be a kettle for movie-goers to drop in additional donations.

All proceeds from the event will aid in supporting the many programs and services offered by The Salvation Army. “Every year we employ homeless men and women to bell ring. This year's donations will help offset the cost of wages in order for us to stretch our resources further in many other much needed areas. We are also looking for individuals and local businesses to match the money raised from this event,” states Linden.

A brief synopsis of Guys and Dolls (1955)

All the hot gamblers are in town, and they're all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this week's incarnation of "The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York." The only problem is, he needs $1,000 to get the place. Throw in Sarah Brown, who's short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathan's $1,000 bet that he can't get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the music/lyrics of Frank Loesser, and you've got quite a musical! Includes the songs: “Fugue for Tinhorns,” "Luck Be a Lady," "Sit Down” and “You're Rocking the Boat.” Starring: Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine.
