Volunteers welcome: The Yury Shulman's Chess Without Borders Organization is offering a leadership opportunity to students and community members to join the group of chess students to volunteer at the South Elgin Rehabilitation Center, 746 W. Spring St., South Elgin from 10 a.m.-noon June 11. Musicians and all other artists are also welcome to entertain the resident with their talents. Students will teach chess and socialize with residents and deliver puzzles and books donated by Half Price Book Store in Palatine. Flag Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. June 14, Langendorf Park, Barrington. Hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Barrington Memorial Post 7706 and American Legion Post 158 to honor the nation's flag and what it stands for.

CLC Blood Drive: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 in the Anderson Court of Building A, College of Lake County, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake. Donors will receive a free VIP backstage pass to the Vans Warped Tour '08 concert on Aug. 2 at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park (concert tickets have to be purchased separately) and a free music download card with 18 songs from bands appearing on the concert tour. Donors must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and not have donated blood within 56 days. Bring a photo ID. Treasures for the Troops: Drop boxes are located at the Wilson Nurseries locations at 1555 N. U.S. Highway 12, Volo and 43W967 Route 72, Hampshire. Treasures for the Troops Collection hoping to fill 200 boxes with treats and treasures for the troops in Iraq to be distributed by in-country chaplains in time for July 4 celebrations. Requested items include DVDs, paperback books, puzzle books (Sudoku, crossword puzzle books, brainteasers), (appropriate) magazines; wet wipes; lip balm, toiletries (travel size are perfect); sunscreen; hard candy; hand sanitizer; Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D); powdered drinks; T-shirts (company issued are ideal), stationery. Except the magazines, books, games and DVDs, all items must be in new, unopened condition. Do not give chocolate or soft candy. Donations toward the cost of postage will also be accepted. A flat-rate box to Iraq or Afghanistan is $10 to ship, regardless of weight. Including a note or a card to let these servicemen and women know of your support would be extra special to all of them. Allendale Association: A not-for-profit children's facility in Lake Villa, looking for qualified volunteers to work directly with children or on other projects. Help a child develop positive relationships with adults, share gardening knowledge in the vocational horticultural center, evaluate a student's Individual Education Plans and meet with the child's therapeutic team, work in the thrift store, or help in other ways.
