Police officers raise $1,000 for injured Aurora student

A Friday night fundraiser held in Aurora by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives raised enough money at its holiday dance to present the beneficiary with a check for $1,000, said Elgin Sgt. Gary Neal, the chapter's vice president.

Richard "Tre" Winfrey was an honor student and band member from East Aurora High School who was paralyzed from the neck down after a 2007 shooting in Aurora.

Officers from the not-for-profit organization that includes cops from the Northern suburbs, attended the party, held at the Pipers Banquet Hall.

If you missed the dance but would still like to help Winfrey, you can send it to one of two places: Elgin Police Department, c/o Sgt. Gary Neal, 151 Douglas Ave., Elgin, IL 60120, or NIC-NOBLE, P.O. Box 1321, Aurora, IL 60507. Please put it in the name of Lt. Keith Cross.

Exercise your ankles: The Lake in the Hills ick skating rinks are officially open and ready for action. There are two rinks in the village - one on the east side at 617 Anderson Drive and the other on the west side.

Officials will close the rinks if it's warmer than 32 degrees or if the wind chill makes it feel like its -10 degrees outside.

A red flag on the rinks mean bad ice conditions, hence, no skating.

Hockey is not allowed on either rink.
