Dec. 6: Dine on student-prepared hors d'oeuvres and desserts to support scholarships; enjoy free international film 'Shoplifters'

Interested in an evening of delicious appetizers and desserts, followed by a free showing of a critically acclaimed international film?

Enjoy culinary student-prepared hors d'oeuvres and desserts while helping raise funds for scholarships at a culinary festival Friday, Dec. 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Café Willow at College of Lake County's Grayslake Campus. For evening entertainment, "Shoplifters," an Oscar-nominated drama from Japan, follows at 7 p.m. in Room C105.

Savor the creations made by students in CLC's hospitality and culinary management program. Start with smoked meats, sausages, pâtés and terrines made in the garde manger, a French term referring to foods prepared in the cold kitchen. Don't miss the prime rib carving station and other hot items, including smoked pork loin and brined chicken. Save room for pastries and petit fours, including orange and chocolate tartlets, key lime cheesecake on coconut pate sable and guava mousse domes on linzer cookies. Students have mastered the techniques and ingredients featured in this special event. Beer, wine and a signature cocktail will be available for purchase with appropriate ID. Bon appétit!

Admission is $20 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit CLC's hospitality and culinary management student scholarships. Tickets are available at the Grayslake Campus, in the Business and Social Sciences division office, Room T302 or in Prairie, the student-managed restaurant in the Lower Level A Wing (during service hours only). For tickets, call the Business and Social Sciences division office at (847) 543-2047.

Less than a minute walk from Café Willow is the showing of "Shoplifters," an award-winning film from the Cannes Film Festival. "Shoplifters" is an irresistible blend of tear-jerking family melodrama and journalistic social commentary. A family in Tokyo survives together in poverty often through petty crime. When they take in a terrified girl, abandoned by abusive parents, unwanted scrutiny soon reveals painful truth about their family. Made in 2018, the film has been a box-office hit across Asia.
