Elmhurst Choral Union and Orchestra to perform Liszt, Schubert April 28
The Elmhurst Choral Union and Orchestra will present music by Liszt and Schubert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in the Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College.
Guest soloists Susan Nelson, Amy Pickering, John Concepcion, and Michael Cavalieri join the chorus, and a professional orchestra under conductor Scott Uddenberg in works by composers best known for other types of music.
Franz Liszt was the rock star pianist of his generation, and his compositions continue to amaze and challenge pianists. Late in life, he turned to sacred texts for inspiration, and his dramatic Coronation Mass was created for a historic occasion. As its name indicated, the work was first performed for the Austrian emperor and empress being crowned as king and queen of Hungary, at the commencement of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Franz Schubert was famous for his symphonies and songs for solo voice, and his choral works such as his tuneful Mass in G Major are mostly familiar to choruses.
A preconcert lecture by composer David DeVasto begins at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $25, $23 for seniors, or $10 for youth, age 7 to 22.
Tickets are available from elmhurstchoralunion.org, (800) 838-3006, or at the door.
