More than 260 Adult Education students explore careers at CLC student success fair

More than 260 students in the College of Lake County's Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education and English as a Second Language program attended a Feb. 27 Student Success Fair to set their academic goals and explore CLC career programs. The event, which included morning and evening sessions, took place at the University Center of Lake County, located adjacent to CLC's Grayslake Campus.

The students met with career program faculty and learned about CLC's career certificates in various industry clusters, including education, healthcare, technology, business and horticulture.

In addition, the students explored vocational programs from CLC's Workforce and Professional Development Institute, including forklift operator, personal care aide, pharmacy technician, real estate, truck driver and veterinary assistant.

The Adult Education students also were able to meet with representatives from CLC departments including counseling/advising, admissions and enrollment, financial aid and the career and job placement center. External participants included the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, the University Center of Lake County and the Job Center of Lake County.

"We organize the event as an efficient way to help the Adult Education students set their academic goals, as well as provide the students with the proper resources, advice and appropriate transition programs," said Arlene Santos-George, Ph.D., dean of Adult Education and ESL division.

Students, for their part, appreciated having a one-stop event to learn of the educational and career opportunities-and gain an optimistic outlook on their own futures. "The veterinary assistant program, offered by CLC's Workforce and Professional Development Institute, looked appealing to me," said Margie Butler, a Round Lake resident. "I have already passed the GED® reading test and that gave me the inspiration to finish my high-school equivalency diploma. I also signed up to meet with financial aid representatives. So, things are looking very encouraging for me."
