March 14: CLC hosts fourth annual Veterans Creative Arts Festival

More than 100 area military veterans will display their creative talents in writing, dance, drama and music at the fourth annual Veterans Creative Arts Festival at the College of Lake County Thursday, March 14 from 1-3 p.m. in the Room A011 Auditorium on the Grayslake Campus. The free event is open to the public.

Veterans who are registered with the Captain James H. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago are the festival's participants, said Joe Bochantin, CLC's veteran student services coordinator. Gold-medal winners from CLC and other regional competitions will compete in the 2019 National Veterans Creative Art Festival, held Oct. 28 to Nov. 3 in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Explaining the reason for the festival, Bochantin said the creative arts are used as a form of physically and emotional therapy at Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals nationwide. "This annual competition recognizes the progress and recovery made through that therapy, and it raises the visibility of the creative achievements of our nation's veterans after disease, disability or life crisis," said Bochantin, who served in the U.S. Army.

The festival is hosted by CLC's veteran student services department, presented by the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Healthcare Center and sponsored by the American Legion Women's Auxiliary.

In addition to the festival, an art exhibit will be on display in Room A022 Tuesday, March 12 to Thursday, March 14.

The College of Lake County has been named by G.I. Jobs magazine as a Military Friendly® Gold School Award recipient for 2018-19, the second consecutive year that it has achieved the Gold status.
