COD to Host Excellence in History Presentation April 14

College of DuPage will host keynote speaker Edward Bates as part of the 20th annual Carter D. Carroll Excellence in History Awards ceremony on Monday, April 14.

This presentation - which is free and open to the public - will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Health and Science Center (HSC), Room 1234, on the College's main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd., in Glen Ellyn.

During his program, Bates will discuss "Urban and Rural Agricultural Migrants from Mexico: Ethnic Labor Agencies and Government Programs in the Laredo-San Antonio Corridor, 1915 to 1925," which will cover factors that contributed to greatly increased immigration from Northern Mexico in the early 1900s, the effects this influx in population had on the labor market and the subsequent living conditions experienced by immigrant families. Edward Bates has been an adjunct History professor at College of DuPage for nearly ten years. He earned both a bachelor's and master's degree from Northern Illinois University where he is currently pursuing his doctorate.

Since its inception in 1994, the Carter Carroll Excellence in History Award honors students for excellent writing achievement in the field of history. Professor Carter D. Carroll was a "founding" faculty member at COD who taught history at the College for more than two decades. Students who earns this award receive a certificate, a $250 stipend and an opportunity to attend an awards banquet that recognizes their achievement.
