Advocate Condell offers September community education programs
Advocate Condell Medical Center is offering community education lectures and screenings on a wide range of health issues in August.
All programs are free unless noted. Registration is required. Participants will interact with clinicians and receive information on hospital and other health services.
The programs are:
Matter of Balance
Series of 9 classes begins Sept. 17. Matter of Balance emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. This program has been adapted from the original intervention to be more suitable for community-dwelling older adults by allowing small group sessions to be led by a trained facilitator. Mundelein Park District Wellness Fair
Wednesday, Sept. 18, 9 am- 1pm, Mundelein Park District, 1401 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein. Wellness fair targeting adults and seniors. Condell will offer free cardiovascular health tests and flu shots. For adults 18 and up. No registration necessary, just stop by!
Winter Sports Injury Prevention Panel
Thursday, Sept. 19; 6 pm; Advocate Condell Medical Center Conference Center, 700 Garfield Ave., Libertyville. Sports injuries can affect your child's physical health as well as cognitive health. We have assembled an extraordinary panel of clinical experts to educate parents and coaches on keeping kids safe while playing winter sports at the club, high school, middle or elementary school level. Gregory Caronis, MD, Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, will speak on sports injuries of the foot and ankle in the young athlete, including sign and symptoms and latest treatments. Jonathon Citow, MD, Board Certified Neurosurgeon, will discuss the cause and effects of concussions, and guidelines for school and athletics. Our team of Rehab and fitness professionals will be available for questions and have resources so you can get the help you need in the event of an injury. Skin Cancer Screening
Friday, Sept. 20, 3-6 pm, Advocate Condell Medical Center, 801 S. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville. Skin cancer will affect 1 in 5 Americans, and more than 3.5 million new cases in 2 million people are diagnosed each year. With early detection, skin cancer is highly treatable. This free screening, administered by Martha Arroyo, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist, takes about 10 minutes. A full body check takes place in a private setting. Duffy/Sullivan Kids Health Fair

New Trends and Best Practices in Joint Replacement
Thursday, Sept. 26, 8 am, Advocate Condell West Tower 2/3. Is a shorter stay after a joint replacement right for you? If you are in overall good health and motivated to participate in rehab, and have a strong at-home support system, you might be a candidate. Thomas Baier, MD, Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery, will talk about our minimally invasive approach and what you can expect, and answer your questions. Cancer Nutrition
Designed to teach cancer patients and their caregivers how a healthy diet can impact treatment and recovery. The free weekly program will cover a variety of nutritional topics, presented by dietician Ashley McGinn, RD, LDN. Participants will be able to ask questions.
