CLC celebrating literacy awareness
To draw attention to the high school dropout problem and literacy issues, the College of Lake County’s Adult Education department is participating in National Adult Education and Family Literacy Awareness week, Sept. 10-16, by promoting the achievements of its students and seeking new literacy volunteers. Among adults in Lake County, 11.5 percent have not graduated from high school. CLC’s Adult Basic Education, GED and ESL division is actively pursuing an adult student population that is considered the hardest to reach but the most in need, according to Michele Vaughn, associate dean of community education. In 2012, adult learners from various backgrounds enrolled in adult literacy and secondary education to accomplish the General Education Development (GED) certificate, which is equivalent to a high school diploma.
