Birthday 'Party in a Bag' for needy children
On Friday June 1st, McDonald's Corporation of Oak Brook donated 50 “Party in a Bag Kits” full of party supplies such as candles, cake mix, frosting, balloons, noise makers, streamers, napkins, plates and cups to the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of Carol Stream, targeted for the needy children served by the charity. These kits will be included in the 20 pound “birthday boxes” of HSP's Children's Birthday Project, which provide new toys, books, stuffed animals, school supplies, and all the items necessary to throw a birthday party to impoverished children ages 3 to 11. The McDonald's Corporation has been heavily involved in helping HSP relieve the burden poverty has placed upon these needy children since 2001, primarily by donating new toys and school supplies collected by the corporation's employees.
Karole Kettering, Founder and Executive Director of HSP, said “the McDonald's corporation has been a good friend and valuable partner in helping HSP fulfill the needs of children in the community. Their support has been instrumental in our mission to create memorable birthdays for children in need.”
The “Party in a Bag kits” will be used for HSP's Children's Birthday Project which provides 890 needy children, ages 3-11, with a 20 lb. Birthday Box. In the box are 4-8 toys which includes a game or puzzle, activity/learning toy, crafting/art set, or sports equipment and gender specific toys. They also receive 5-7 new books, school supplies, a stuffed animal, mini filler gifts, and a party-in-a-box. The child receives the birthday package the week of their birthday, and provides a memorable “Special Day” for an impoverished child in our community. A sponsorship for a child is only $54 and also includes gifts at Christmas time, back-to-school supplies, and the child's family becomes eligible for the HSP's summer-time Feed the Kids Program and food at Christmas as well.

About The Humanitarian Service Project
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,600 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 90 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 890 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
