Divine Savior parishsoners help needy seniors

The parishoners of Divine Savior Parish in Downers Grove have raised $1,250 to help the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of Carol Stream, feed and support an impoverished senior citizen. This parishoners collected the donated money as a service on top of the many other commitments they are engaged in to help the needy through HSP and other community outlets.

Divine Savior Parish was founded in 1969, and has since been focused in providing for the needy of the community. Among the numerous intiatives the parish is involved in include projects designed to assist children, the hungry, and those suffering from illness. Divine Savior has been partnered with HSP to reach out to needy children and senior citizens in the area for over two decades. In this time period, the group has participated in a number of HSP's programs to serve those living under poverty in DuPage and Kane Counties, including their annual contribution of gifts for hundreds of needy children and senior citizens involved in HSP's Christmas Offering.

Karole Kettering, co-founder and executive director of HSP, said of Divine Savior Parish, "This wonderful gift to needy seniors is just the most recent example of the caring and generous nature of the parishoners of Divine Savior Parish. We have seen the world change a lot since Divine Savior began supporting HSP, but one thing that has remained unchanged is the parishoners enduring commitment to serve those in need."

Divine Savior Parish's gift will support A needy s enior in HSP's Senior Citizen Project. Through the project, needy seniors receive a monthly delivery that includes over 15 selections of fresh fruits and vegetables, 7 frozen meats, 5 grocery bags of non-perishables, 2 bags of paper products, containing items such as toilet paper, tissue, and personal care items. A sponsorship of $70/month for a senior also includes monthly gifts from a secret-pal (a community donor), gifts at Christmas time and a monthly meal delivered by volunteers. The seniors in HSP's program also receive other benefits such as free eye glasses referrals, and access to reduced cost denistry and hearing aids.

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,600 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
