CLC literary publications to hold receptions

The literary arts are alive at the College of Lake County. To celebrate the writing and artistic talents represented in CLC’s two annual literary publications, Willow Review and Prairie Voices, readings will be held April 19 and 30, at the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Both events are free and open to the public. Copies of the new issues will be available at the readings and are also for purchase at CLC book stores.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, the Willow Review literary magazine will hold a reading and reception in Room C003. Contributors to this year’s award-winning literary magazine will read from their original poetry and prose. The featured Illinois author is James Reiss. His latest book is “Riff on Six: New and Selected Poems” (Salt Publishing). His work has appeared in such publications as The American Poetry Review, The Atlantic, Esquire, The Hudson Review, The Iowa Review, The Nation, The New Republic, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Paris Review, Poetry, Prairie Schooner and Slate. His first poetry collection, “The Breathers” (Ecco Press), was nominated for the National Book Award. His fourth book of poems, “Ten Thousand Good Mornings” (Carnegie Mellon University Press), was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

Willow Review is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Its editor is Michael Latza, CLC English professor.

From 6-9 p.m. on Monday, April 30 in Room C003, Prairie Voices, CLC’s literary/art journal, will host a reception honoring the students whose work was accepted for publication. This year’s issue includes 50 short stories, essays, poems and samples of visual art. Students wrote about topics and themes which include love, family life, the writing process, suicide, death, addiction, technology, the aftermath of Sept. 11 and more, according to editor Nicholas Schevera, CLC English professor.
