One-man show explores Palestinian plight

On Saturday, April 28, writer Bruce Bradley will be presenting his theatrical adaptation of the book "We Belong to the Land," which is the international best-selling autobiography of Father Elias Chacour, who has been working for peace in Israel/Palestine for the past 45 years.

Bradley's dramatized reading will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at First Presbyterian Wheaton, 715 N. Carlton. He is sponsored by Abraham's Children, a long time mission of First Presbyterian Church.

It began after a pilgrimage almost 17 years ago when the plight of Christian Brothers and Sisters in the Holy Land became apparent. Abraham's Children focuses on three vital opportunities: education, fund raising, and the sale of unique Palestinian Christian handicrafts.

"We Belong to the Land" tells how, against overwhelming odds, Father Chacour established the multicultural Mar Elias School in Ibillin, where Christians, Jews, Muslims and Druze are educated side-by-side without regard for religious or ethnic denomination. “It's a truly inspirational story,” says Bradley.

What strikes Bradley most forcefully about Chacour's story is his reaction to the Palestinian plight in Israel.

“It's quite remarkable to see how Chacour escapes the traditionally dualistic view of Middle Eastern politics,” he says. “Rather than adopt a contrary stance, he consistently seeks a third path that will allow all parties involved to act with dignity and fairness. He is a genuine peacemaker.”

The performance will be followed by refreshments and a question-and-answer session with Bradley. Tickets are $12 and are available through the Church office 630-668-5147. All proceeds will benefit the work of Father Chacour.
