Karol’s gem lifts Grayslake Central
Senior Brian Karol tossed a 2-hitter with 6 strikeouts, as Grayslake Central’s baseball team blanked visiting Highland Park 10-0 in five innings Wednesday.
Karol improved to 2-0, as the Rams increased their record to 6-3 with the nonconference victory.
“Brian was fantastic,” Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. “He’s put in a lot of time and is a great example of how hard work pays off.”
Kristian Meehan jump-started the GC offense with a first-inning 3-run homer. Nick Hosford had a big day at the plate as well with a double and 2 singles. He also scored 3 runs. Sean Baban added a pair of hits for the Rams.
“Kids swung the bat well for the second (game) in a row,” Whalen said. “We need to keep it going because the schedule does not get any easier.”
Mundelein 8, Lake Forest 1: Bryan Wiener and Zach Osisek each went 3-for-4, and Matt Langlie pitched a complete game with 7 strikeouts in the North Suburban Lake Division game.
Mundelein (12-2, 2-0) also got 2 hits, including a triple, from Jordan Wiegold.
Wauconda 4, Lakes 3: Tony Kaminsky’s RBI single and Jake Ziolkowski’s run-scoring double highlighted a 2-run seventh inning, as the visiting Bulldogs rallied from a 3-2 deficit to beat the Eagles in North Suburban Prairie action for the second day in a row.
Brandon Gibis had a 2-run single in the sixth for Wauconda (5-1, 2-0) to put the Bulldogs up 2-1.
Lakes (3-7, 0-2) scored twice in its half of the sixth to regain the lead.
Shawn Sundquist earned the win.
Nick Traska led Lakes offensively, going 3-fort-4 with 2 stolen bases and a run scored.
Crystal Lake Central 8, Carmel 2: The Corsairs (6-3) got 2 hits apiece from Sean Brennan, Tyler Murphy and Blake Bucsa. Brian Brennan had a double.
Libertyville 7, Palatine 3: Kyle Cibrario pitched a complete game for the visiting Wildcats in the nonconference game, allowing just 1 earned run while striking out eight and walking three.
Evan Skoug went 2-for-3 for Libertyville (6-2), while Anthony Mack and Nick Coutre had doubles.
Stevenson 12, Zion-Benton 0: Jon Savarise struck out nine, walked two and allowed 4 hits in a five-inning complete game, as the host Patriots beat the Zee-Bees for the second straight day in North Suburban Lake play.
Savarise (1-0) helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 with a triple, double and 4 RBI. Stevenson (5-3, 2-0) also got a big day at the plate from Will Bourbon, who was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs and 2 RBI.
Vernon Hills 15, Round Lake 5: Pat Crowley missed Tuesday’s game due to illness and it was uncertain as to whether he would be able to go for the Cougars Wednesday.
“Pat toughed it out and gave his team 4 solid innings,” Vernon Hills coach Jay Czarnecki said.
Round Lake didn’t make it easy, as the Panthers jumped scored twice in the top of the first.
With the Cougars down 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Crowley ignited an 8-run rally when he reached on an infield error.
Nine different Cougars hit safely in the game. Tyler Feece (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI) and Austin Hagen (2-for-4, 2 RBI) led the way for Vernon Hills. Connor Dickman, Chris Marras, Steve Nelson, Crowley, Brett Peterson, Colin Krippinger and Jay Miller all drove in runs.
Crowley earned the win to improve to 3-0. Jamie Roussel pitched a scoreless fifth inning for Vernon Hills, retiring the side three-up, three-down.
For Round Lake, Ryan Newman was 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI, while Juan Abascal had a triple and 2 RBI.
