ESL learners invited to learn about nursing

All English as a Second Language learners interested in becoming certified nursing assistants are invited to an ESL-NAE Information Session from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, in Room A368 at McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake.
The information session is free and is open for anyone whose native language is not English. The session will provide an overview of MCC’s Nursing Assistant Education training opportunity, course content, career information and prerequisites. After students successfully complete the Nursing Assistant class, students are eligible to take the written State Nurse Aide Competency Exam. Upon passing the Nurse Aide Competency Exam, a student’s name is added to the Healthcare Worker Registry, which allows students to be employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
CNA’s work under the direct supervision of a Licensed Practical Nurse or a Registered Nurse, providing much of the hands-on care of patients. CNA employment options include long-term care facilities, hospitals, clinics and other health care settings.
All nurse assistant students must provide proof of a valid, government-issued social security number to qualify for this program. Other requirements will be explained at the information session.
The ESL-NAE training program will begin in January and will provide additional instruction to ESL learners who are taking the accredited NAE course. This is a noncredit pre-NAE class offered simultaneously with the accredited NAE course.
The course will cover medical terminology and other basic skills needed by ESL learners. A minimum of 10 students will be accepted into the program.
Students will receive 50 percent of tuition paid through an Adult Education grant. Students are responsible for the other 50 percent of tuition, plus al other course fees, books and supplies. Students will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis after students meet all prerequisites.
