Appointments Still Available for Advocate Condell's Food For Flu Program on Oct. 10

Advocate Condell Fights Flu, Hunger With October Clinic

Appointments are still available for Advocate Condell Medical Center's Food for Flu program, in which shots are offered at a reduced cost in exchange for a donation of non-perishable food.

The shots will be offered following a lecture by Mobola Cambell-Yesufu, MD, board certified in infectious disease. Dr. Campbell-Yesufu, a member of with Metro Infectious Disease Consultants who is affiliated with Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, will give tips on how to stay healthy during flu season. You can watch a video with Dr. Campbell-Yesufu's tips at http://goo.gl/wbQoX.

The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Advocate Condell's Centre Club location in Gurnee, at 1405 N. Hunt Club Road. Flu shots will be offered from 6-8 p.m., at a cost of $10 plus a non-perishable food item. Food collected will be donated to a Lake County food pantry. Shots are also available, while supplies last, at Advocate Condell's Immediate Care Centers in Gurnee, Round Lake Beach and Round Lake Beach for $25.

Advocate Condell's Food for Flu program started in 2008, said Sara Jensen, Director of Ambulatory Services. Through the initiative, Advocate Condell has donated to the Libertyville Township Food Pantry.

“We thought this was a great way to serve the community,” Jensen said. “Getting vaccinated against the flu is critical to maintaining good health in the fall and winter. By making the food donation, you feel good about helping others, and the vaccine keeps you feeling good in the months ahead.”

Annual outbreaks of the seasonal flu usually occur during the late fall through early spring. In a typical year, about 5 to 20 percent of the population gets the flu. Flu-related deaths average 23,600 a year, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year with flu-related illnesses.

The Center for Disease Control recommends vaccination for most people 6 months and older. Vaccination is critical for people in high-risk groups, and those who care for them, such as health care workers.

“The flu is a serious disease, particularly for those at high risk for developing flu-related complications, which includes young children, seniors, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions. The best way to protect yourself and those around you is to get vaccinated,” said. Dr. Campbell-Yesufu.
