Glenbard West flag flying proudly — in Wheaton?

Those passing by Wheaton’s city hall this week might have to do a double-take to figure out where they are.

That’s because the flags flying outside the building at 303 W. Wesley St. don’t have anything to do with Wheaton, but rather with its neighbor to the east, Glen Ellyn.

For one week, the flags of the village of Glen Ellyn and Glenbard West High School are flying high above Wheaton — the result of a friendly wager between the towns’ mayors over the Aug. 28 football game that pitted Glenbard West against Wheaton Warrenville South.

The Hilltoppers from Glenbard West defeated the Tigers from Wheaton 21-7 in a nationally televised game on ESPN2 from Wheaton’s Red Grange Field.

On Tuesday morning, Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk upheld his end of the deal, letting Glen Ellyn Village President Mark Pfefferman raise the Glen Ellyn and Glenbard West flags outside city hall.

It’s the second wager between the two mayors over a Hilltoppers-Tigers game. In 2009, they wagered flagpole space before the two teams met in the Class 7A state championship game. Wheaton Warrenville South won that game 31-24 in double-overtime.

So Wheaton’s city flag and the Wheaton Warrenville South school flag flew outside Glen Ellyn’s village hall.

But for the rest of this week, Glen Ellyn and Glenbard West have bragging rights.
