CLC sends study abroad to India

India is the destination for 10 students from the College of Lake County who are participating in CLC’s first study abroad experience to India. The students are at Pondicherry University in Southeast India through June 4.

The field study trip is part of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI — A grant for international education and world languages and is a joint effort of CLC and Joliet Junior College.

Students were awarded nearly $15,000 in merit scholarships courtesy of the U.S.D.E., ranging from $600 to $1,150.

While at Pondicherry University, students take either Introduction to International Film with Dr. Chris Cooling or Introduction to Computers with Professor Ram Raghuraman of JJC.

In addition to attending classes and lectures, students visit a variety of cultural and historical sites, including the Ghandi Monument, Bharati Memorial Museum, the Arikamedu archeological site, the Pondicherry Museum and the Sri Aurobimo Ashram.

Students will also spend an afternoon doing volunteer work at a hospital.

The next USDE grant-funded field study trip will be to Japan, May 13 to June 1, 2012. Scholarships will be awarded to qualified CLC students through the Title VI-A grant.

The students will study psychology with Dr. Ken Kikuchi, CLC professor of psychology, and macroeconomics with JJC economics professor, Dr. Nataliya Marchenko.

The field study includes visits to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Matsuyama and Kyoto.

CLC has transformed its international education offerings from the typical short-term field study trips into an award-winning comprehensive program.

In January 2010, CLC established a Center for International Education, which serves as a central office to handle recruitment and issues of international students as well as many other international programs and activities for students and faculty.

In February 2010, CLC won the Institute for International Education’s Andrew Heiskell Award for best study abroad program at a community college. During fall semester 2010, 120 students from 43 countries enrolled at CLC.
