CLC presents Guest Artist Concert

Chris Vadala, one of the country’s foremost woodwind artists, will be featured at the College of Lake County 34th annual Guest Artist Concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.

Vadala will play with both the Wind Ensemble and the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble. Both ensembles are conducted by Dr. Michael Flack, director of bands.

Vadala was a standout woodwind artist with the Chuck Mangione Quartet for many years and has performed and/or recorded with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Chick Corea, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Placido Domingo, Sarah Vaughn, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Henry Mancini and Doc Severinsen.

He has appeared on more than 100 recordings to date, as well as innumerable jingle sessions, film and TV scores, performing on saxophone, flute and clarinet.

A native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he graduated from the Eastman School of Music, earning the honor of the performer’s certificate in saxophone as well as a B.M. in music education. He received a master’s degree in clarinet from Connecticut College and pursued postgraduate study in woodwinds at Eastman. For information on this distinguished musician, visit chrisvadala.com.

Vadala serves as director of jazz studies, saxophone professor and distinguished scholar-teacher at the University of Maryland. His previous academic appointments include teaching studio woodwinds and conducting jazz ensembles at Connecticut College, Montgomery College, Hampton University, Prince George’s Community College and Mount Vernon College, as well as visiting professor of saxophone at the Eastman School of Music, 1995 and 2001.

The CLC Wind Ensemble will perform the following compositions: “The Hounds of Spring” by Alfred Reed, “Equus” by Eric Whitacre, “Fanfare Ritmico” by Jennifer Higdon and “Angels in the Architecture” by Frank Ticheli. Vadala will join the ensemble on “The Feel of a Vision” by Chuck Mangione, arranged by Frederick Lewis.

The Monday Night Jazz Ensemble will perform “Easy Money” by Benny Carter, “Back Home Again in Indiana” by James F. Hanley, arranged by John Clayton; and “Cruisin’ For a Bluesin’” by Andy Weiner, arranged by Peter Blair. Vadala will join the jazz band on the following charts: “A Night In Tunisia” by Dizzy Gillespie, arranged by Jeff Tyzik; “Alter Ego” by James Williams, arranged by Justin Cockerham; “Take The ‘A’ Train” by Billy Strayhorn, arranged by Jeff Tyzik; “Quintessence” by Quincy Jones, arranged by Rob McConnell; and “Oliver” by Jeff Tyzik.

The concert will be held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $5 for CLC students/staff/Alumni Association members/seniors 65+ (price includes a $1 JLC facility fee per ticket).

The final CLC Music Department event of the 2010-11 season will be the Concert Band’s spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11. The concert band, under the direction of John Mose, will play a variety of classical and modern selections.
