Yesterday's skills will not work with today's jobs— jobseekers need to upgrade their skills!

Over 600 job seekers attended the “Spring Forward Job Fair and Training Provider Expo” at the Alfred Campanelli YMCA in Schaumburg recently to meet with employers and education/training providers. Attendees had the opportunity to meet with a variety of local employers and training providers.

One company in particular, Peacock Engineering, was hiring for many positions. “We are looking to fill a variety of positions including production manager, project engineer, safety manager and mechanics. It is terrific to see so many enthusiastic job seekers under one roof,” said Andrea Gabanski, HR Department Recruiter.

Special emphasis was placed on upgrading job hunting skills for today's competitive environment so that job hunters can more readily connect with hiring managers in the future.

Mohammed Faheem, Manager of Business Employer Services & Community Relations for workNet of Northern Cook County states, “It's critical for today's job hunters to recognize that the rules have changed. They must continue to upgrade their skills to ensure that they have skill-sets today's employers require.”

Training grants may be available through the workforce investment act for low-income adults, dislocated workers and youth.

One week earlier, workNet of Northern Cook County hosted a “Job-Seeker Preparedness Workshop,” which featured educational sessions on interview techniques, networking, job-hunting skills, and resume writing and review. At this interactive program job-seekers learned how to make the most effective use of their time, and how to understand the different types of job fairs. They also learned the top five skills employers value most, and the absolutely critical last step of attending a job fair.

The program was presented by Medusa Consulting Inc., and co-sponsored by Alfred Campanelli YMCA, the Illinois Department of Employment Security, Illinois workNet Center of Northern Cook County, Schaumburg Township District Library and the Village of Schaumburg.
