CLC library redesign contest
When the College of Lake County Library opened in 1974, students searched for resources using massive card catalogs. There was not a computer in sight.
Individual study carrels provided a quiet place to prepare for tests and make handwritten notes.
Although the CLC library’s second-floor layout has not changed a lot since then, student and instructor information needs have evolved.
Today’s library users require spaces where they can work individually or in groups, with computers and wireless Internet at their disposal. They need flexible spaces that support problem solving and collaborative learning.
To engage CLC students in creating a library space that is better suited to their needs, the CLC library and the architectural technology program are co-sponsoring a contest to help redesign the second-floor of the library.
Open to students and community members, the contest offers a cash prize of $500 for the winning designer. It is not open to design or architectural professionals.
Contestants are invited to attend one of two informational meetings — Thursday, Feb. 3, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. or Friday, Feb. 4, from 2 to 3 p.m. — in rooms T326-328 (Technology Building) on the CLC Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.
“We are trying to create the optimal learning experience for students by blending library physical spaces with virtual environments,” said Holly Ledvina, CLC librarian.
Contestants are encouraged to work with David Petrulis, chairman of the architectural technology program, on preparing their designs for the contest. Petrulis can be contacted at (847) 543-2496 or dpetrulis@clcillinois.edu.
“We’re interested in having library users tell us what they want in their space,” said Michelle Carter, CLC librarian.
Information packets are available by e-mailing the library at librarian@clcillinois.edu beginning Feb. 3.
Information session attendance is not required for participation, but attendees will be able to ask questions about the contest and basic library design principles to Petrulis, Legat Architects representative Ted Hogue and KI representative Jonathan Matta.
Contestants must submit their designs using CAD (computer aided design) software, which is available for use in the library first floor.
In addition to the $500 first prize, sponsored by the Library and the Engineering, Math and Physical Sciences Division, a second-place award will also be offered — an office chair donated by KI.
“Providing an opportunity to participate in a design competition is new at CLC, and it will be a valuable experience for our students,” Petrulis said. “I am also excited that students will be able to get more involved in the shaping of our campus environment through this competition. We look forward to more opportunities like this and thank the library for their forward-thinking approach to shaping the future of this important service at CLC.”
Projects are due for a juried presentation on Friday, April 15, starting at 9:30 a.m. in the library’s Esper Petersen Reading Room. Awards will be announced by CLC President Jerry Weber at noon.
