Adult literacy:
An orientation session for adult literacy tutors is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 26 at College of Lake County in Grayslake.
The literacy program, Adult Learning Connection, is a partnership between the Waukegan Public Library, CLC and Literacy Volunteers of Lake County. Tutoring, which usually involves a three-hour-per-week commitment, occurs one-on-one in public places such as libraries or in a CLC classroom.
Tutors are most needed in Waukegan, North Chicago and Zion, officials said. Potential tutors must have a high school diploma or equivalent, demonstrate strong basic skills and possess a sincere desire to help other adults learn to read. Volunteers must complete training and are expected to attend additional workshops during the year.
The Adult Education tutor training is for individuals interested in tutoring English-speaking adults in basic reading, writing or math. Register or get more information by calling (847) 543-2024.
