Learn how to become a Certified Nursing Assistant
Anyone interested in free training for a career in health care and who speaks English as a second language can attend one of three Certified Nursing Assistant Information Sessions offered at McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake. The sessions will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26 in Room A113; 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3 in Room A117; or 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9 in Room C105.
The information session will highlight a training opportunity for ESL learners to become CNAs. CNA classes start in spring 2011 at McHenry County College. CNAs work under an LPN or RN and provide direct hands-on care to patients. They work in hospitals, nursing homes, home-care settings and in hospice. Entry-level salaries are typically $11-13 per hour.
At each information session, course content, career information and prerequisites will be explained. All nurse assistant students must provide proof of a valid, government issued social security card to qualify for this program.
The program that begins in January will include a noncredit pre-CNA course offered simultaneously with the accredited CNA course. The pre-CNA course is designed to provide additional instruction to ESL Learners who are taking the accredited CNA course. The course will cover medical terminology and other basic skills needed by ESL learners. A maximum of 20 students will be accepted into the program, with all course fees and books covered by the grant. Students will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis after students meet all prerequisites.
This program is a joint effort between MCC's Continuing and Professional Education, Adult Education, and Nursing Departments and is funded by the Flexible and Sustainable Training grant awarded to MCC from the U.S. Department of Labor.
