Vernon Hills rises up against Wauconda
A battle between two of the top girls volleyball teams in the North Suburban Prairie Division went Vernon Hills' way Wednesday night.
Alisa Welter slammed 9 kills, as the Cougars defeated host Wauconda 25-21, 25-20.
Shannon Nugent and Rachel Lira added 7 and 6 kills, respectively, for Vernon Hills (8-11, 3-1), which also received 3 aces from Christie Currie. Nugent and Jasmine Tamalunas (10 setting assists) served 2 aces apiece.
"We served aggressively and played tough defense, which allowed our offense to click," Cougars coach Abbie Gutzmer said.
For Wauconda (11-6, 3-1), Erinn Hellweg had 6 kills, Cara Nance added five, and Ali Morrison pounded four. Megan Tallman dished out 11, delivered 3 aces and recorded 9 digs.
Libertyville d. Warren: The Wildcats ran their record to 10-0 and 4-0 in the North Suburban Lake Division with a 25-10, 25-15 win in Gurnee.
Catie Steffen had 10 kills for Libertyville, which got another solid all-around match from setter Cindy Zhou (2 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks, 15 assists). Taylor Zant added 3 kills, and Kerry Risley also had 2 blocks. Kristen Webb delivered a pair of aces.
Grant d. Round Lake: Becca McMullins ripped 11 kills, and Mareesa Nosalik served 16 of 16 with 5 aces, as the Bulldogs won the North Suburban Prairie match 25-14, 25-23.
Grant's Sophia Trbojevich dished out 20 assists and notched 10 digs, while Tania Trbojevich contributed 2 aces (10-of-11 serving). Stefanie Cahill had 5 kills for the Bulldogs, while Scottley Sandnes totaled 13 digs.
Stevenson d. Mundelein: The Patriots captured the North Suburban Lake match 25-20, 25-22, as Rachel Baader pounded 12 kills and chipped in 8 digs.
Carlee Berland added 7 kills for Stevenson (9-5, 2-1), while Nicole Duszczyk recorded 20 digs. Jenna Przybyla (43 of 46) and Carolyn McDonough (26 of 26) lofted 19 and 13 assists, respectively. Przybyla also served 2 aces and notched 9 digs.
Mundelein (7-10, 1-3) received 4 kills from Brittany Busscher, three from Christine Scott and 13 digs from Erin Howard.
Lake Zurich d. Lake Forest: Amanda Orchard's 11 kills helped the Bears prevail 26-24, 29-27 in North Suburban Lake action.
Lake Zurich (13-4, 2-1) also got 6 kills and 2 blocks from Layne Self. Natalie Gora added 5 kills and 2 blocks, and Alexis Hartman went 66-of-66 setting with 26 assists and also contributed 3 blocks and 2 kills.
Lake Forest's Tori Lanzillotti had 9 kills, while Heidi Sierks dished out 17 assists.
Antioch d. Lakes: The Sequoits overcame a slow start to win the North Suburban Prairie match 9-25, 25-20, 25-10.
Antioch (5-8, 2-1) was led by Jessica Ploss (7 kills, 3 blocks), Brianna Grant (5 kills, 3 blocks, 8 digs), Amber Dalgaard (20 digs, 2 aces), Lauren Tiffany (4 kills), Savana Bailey (16 assists, 8 digs) and Lindsey Gofron (3 kills, 2 aces).
"Good win for us to come back after losing the first set," Sequoits coach Glen Heitman said. "The girls showed a lot of heart and desire. We served tough and our middles were able to dominate the net in the second and third sets."
Sarah Horner had 5 kills and 5 aces for Lakes (3-10, 0-3), while Rachel Sieracke registered 4 kills and 3 aces.
